PRINCE2 vs. PMI's PMBoK

I've heard quite a few comments recently about the relative merits of PRINCE2 [1] vs. the PMI's [2] PMBoK [3] (Project Management Body of Knowledge). Today I came across this presentation [4] which has a few useful comparative comments. In the past I've also noted this short paper comparing PRINCE2 and PMBok [5].

The paper's [5] comments about the role of a Project Manager are raise a striking point. A PMBoK style Project Manager is a dramatically different role from a PRINCE2 Project Manager. Indeed the term Project Manager is probably far too loose a term to mean a great deal!

Steve, This looks very interesting but can you check the link to [5], please? It seems to be in error. Thanks.

I am able to provide a presentation I wrote comparing the two methods. I am a PMI Mentor and know both methods. If you email me at Clinton.Arnold@xtra.co.nz I will send to you the presentation.

Hi Clinton

I am a Kiwi working in London at the moment in UK Central Government where Prince 2 is the name of the game. I would be interested to see your presentation. I can't get a message to you through LinkedIn without joining up for the NZ service which I don't want to do at the moment. Would you send it to me directly?

Many thanks.

Jill

The title of the presentation is a bit misleading, as it is how PRINCE2 complements PMBOK, while it should be Comparing PRINCE2 to PMBOK (or vice versa).

Interesting. Im in South Africa, currently doing an Honours degree in Information Systems and working. Varsity teaches PMBOK, at work we use PRINCE2...so I thought it would be interesting to check the difference.

Clinton, am about to send you an email.thx.

PMBOK is - descriptive - in explaining project management techniques

PRINCE2 is - prescriptive - in explaining how project management techniques should be structured and applied.

Together, a PRINCE2 project management framework with PMBOK techniques makes for a solid approach to operating a project office.

PRINCE2 is a practical methodology and defacto practice within many US corporations that employ PMO & PMBOK. By small example, internal projects typically will not require establishment of new procurement processes as existing corporate policy and processes exist to govern requisition and acquisition. And, the obvious point, ownership by senior leadership team--even in joint ventures, a management team would own and sponsor a project.
