Moving from Blogger to TypePad whilst considering WordPress

Blogger has served me well for the short time I’ve been there, but it has it’s limitations and so I’ve moved to TypePad. But WordPress looks worth considering in the future.

One of the main limitations of Blogger is its lack of support for trackbacks - which provide a key ingredient for real blog to blog conversations. The other significant missing feature is blog categories - the facility to identify blog posts under category names so that readers can pinpoint entries covering relevant topics.

TypePad is a commercial service built around the Moveable Type blog hosting software. It provides the crucial trackbacks and categories and quite a few other features whilst providing a fairly easy to use interface.

WordPress however, looks well worth a thought. It’s free and open source which are good qualities in my book. it also appears (from a brief scan) to support dynamic generation of pages so there’s no need for the whole process or ‘republishing’ a site when a changes is made to the overall look.

The reason’s I’m currently holding back on WordPress are:

  1. I would probably have to set up my own hosting and install the software, and that’s a longer job which requires a bit of time.

  2. WordPress doesn’t currently support multiple blogs unless you install it multiple times. The facility to host multiple blogs from a single installation is down on the agenda for the 1.6 release of WordPress.

My searches looking at this are encompassed in the following mindmap:

Aw, Wordpress isn't that hard to install! Plus, you can now import Blogger's comments along with your posts. After you install Wordpress (which, as I said, is not hard) go to http://www.skeltoac.com/2005/03/12/from-blogger-to-wordpress-2/ for an improved import script.

But on a more useful note, let me say that before I set up hosting I installed Apache, PHP, MySQL and WordPress on my laptop as a localhost testing platform and it wasn't too much of a headache for a guy who's never done more than an Apache installation before.
As for multiple blogs, yeah, you still need multiple installations unless you're crafty enough to get to 1.6 before the devs do. It's kinda like telling Alice to run faster...
And while I'm rambling on your dime, let me also affirm that WordPress does generate pages dynamically. I have a query count in my page's footer to prove it! So you don't have to get a haircut every time you edit a post.
Heck, you can even edit just about any php file you want to, including templates and stylesheets and plugins, from right in the admin pages. That's great for me because I like to tweak things from work, where the proxy blocks all FTP ports.
You're probably getting tired of my evangelism.

Okay, I didn't write a book.
Cheers!

Now I'm sure your blog is going to put me on some kind of spam list, but now that I've installed the Adobe SVG thingy and loaded MSIE to look at it--hassle--I see you're exploring hosting options. GoDaddy.com seems to work for me, but I did find one out there with unmetered bandwidth, if bandwidth is your thing. If I think of it, and if I'm not blocked, I'll let you know.
Cheers!

Sildenafil has been shown to be useful for the prevention and treatment of High-altitude pulmonary edema associated with altitude sickness such as that suffered by mountain climbers.[21][22] While this effect has only recently been discovered, sildenafil is already becoming an accepted treatment for this condition, in particular in situations where the standard treatment of rapid descent has been delayed for some reason.
