Update: Fujitsu ScanSnap fi-5110EOX Paper Scanner
After many discussions leading from my review of the ScanSnap fi-5110EOX in April of this year, it seems like it's time to sum up some of the updates.
The most significant update is that Fujitsu have announced the fi-5110EOXM - a white Macintosh compatible version of the scanner. At last there is official support for the Mac.
But what if you've already purchased an fi-5110EOX or EOX2?
Well, in a similar pattern to before, you can now download the latest Mac driver for all of these models including the new model from the Japanese web site: http://scansnap.fujitsu.com/jp/downloads/mac.html. It's called SnapScan_V10L13.dmg.
Then, once you've installed that, with the very kind help of rm, there is an English localisation that can be downloaded from this discussion thread: http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=32046&page=3&pp=20.
- Download these zip files and copy them into the ScanSnap directory created when installing the driver.
- Then open the Terminal application and change directory to the ScanSnap directory. The easiest way to do this is to enter the command "
cd" (that's with a space after it - and please don't enter the quotes!), then drag the SnapScan directory (folder) from the Finder over the Terminal window and release. This will paste the path name into the terminal and you can then press Return in the Terminal window. - Finally, enter "
unzip ScanSnap13-English1.zip && unzip ScanSnap13-English2.zip" (don't enter the quotes and press Return at the end). If all goes well you're done and you can delete the two zip files. Just double click on the SnapScan Manager and smile! Thank you rm - whoever you are!

Thanks for the update, Stuart!
I've been looking on the Fujitsu USA website for a US English Mac driver for the (original) fi-5110EOX that I have. No luck.
But the Fujitsu Europe website has this page:
http://www.fel.fujitsu.com/home/v3__product.asp?pid=467&inf=doc&wg=75
I enjoyed reading the manual.
http://www.fel.fujitsu.com/support/scanner/manuals/fi-5110eoxm_user_p3pc-1412-02exz0.pdf
I see that the driver now has a counter for the image name; I don't remember that on mine. (To see this, go to page 39 (55 of 121).)
But, when one clicks on Drivers & Software, one sees "No records found." Bummer.
Anyway, thanks again!

Just in case you haven't seen this yet: the new s500 does not come with Mac-compatible Manager/driver software.
Fujitsu US press release
http://www.fujitsu.com/us/fcpa/news/pr/20060321-01.html
Does not appear to be available from Fujitsu Europe yet:
http://www.fel.fujitsu.com/home/v3__wgroup.asp?wg=40
The Fujitsu ScanSnap support page appears to have ScanSnap Manager software for the Mac for the fi-5110EOX1, fi-5110EOX2, and fi-5110EOX3 (!!! I missed that one - wonder if it's comparable to the fi-5110EOXM) (the body/cover colors appear to be different from the US model (and the European model, too, I think)). But not for the s500!

Interesting! It didn't take too long for the Japanese Fujitsu ScanSnap support page to add ScanSnap Manager software for the Mac for the S500. See:
http://scansnap.fujitsu.com/jp/downloads/index.html
Also interesting, when you click on the link to go to the ScanSnap Manager software for the Mac for either the fi-5110EOX1, fi-5110EOX2, fi-5110EOX, or s500, each link takes you to the same page!
http://scansnap.fujitsu.com/jp/downloads/mac.html
When you look down the page, you see that there is only one app that apparently supports all those models:
http://scansnap.fujitsu.com/downloads/jp/jscan/driver/data/ScanSnap_V10L14.dmg
I believe that it was V10L13 until they added the s500.
Cheers!

Is there an english version of this driver for the s500 yet?
Posted by: Dennis Pearce | 14 Apr 2006 18:08:53
I'm looking at the s500 too but I'm waiting for english drivers. I assume that the jp versions won't work on our systems... sigh... About how long do you think this will take? What about the Adobe Acrobat software? Is it mac compatible? (Dual operating system support?)

Fujitsu webpage has presently (June 2006) only the version 14 driver for download. Therefore the hack with the English localizer does not work anymore. Can someone post the old version 13 driver on the web? Or rewrite the hack for version 14 (but that's too much asked for a scanner that is "end of life".)

Could I trouble someone to send me the V10L13 driver as well. I have a 5110E0X and just converted to Mac. One note for those who care: I called Fujitsu and they pointed me to an ftp site (w/temporary password and username) for the English EOXM driver. Why they make this so hard is beyond me. It doesn't work with the EOX, but if you need it just give them a call ((800) 626-4686 (press option 2)). Like others, I have only been able to obtain V10L10, which won't install on my intel mac mini, and V10L14 which does not accept the English localization patch. Any help would be much appreciated.

I have the s500 w/ the J driver V10L14. It is all in japanese but it works flawlessly on my ibook.
If someone can translate the L14 driver to english, it would be all I need...

Not what you are all asking for, but go to http://babelfish.altavista.com/
and at least you can translate the website.

Japanese driver L20 available here:

I have a disk image of the V10L10 and V10L13 installers and the "localiser" app. Email me for a copy. All the installer software seems to do is place a 4 meg application on your computer, there don't seem to be any little driver files spread all over the place. I tried to install V10L14 and V10L20 and they did fine on my Intel Mac Mini, except that they're Japanese and the localiser doesn't work. There is no benefit to V10L14 that I can see. I went back to my copy of V10L13, and "installed" it by copying it from my network drive.

I've gotten quite a few requests from Macstuff readers for these drivers and I have discovered s a better solution--a way to use the current Japanese driver for the Black ScanSnap with the current English localizer for the new (White) ScanSnap driver, which has been disabled for the Black ScanSnap. It requires no special software tools to hack, just a slightly adventuresome spirit.
This is from "RobK," works perfectly for me on my Intel Mac Mini, and was posted all the way back on 10/24/2005 at:

Scansnap Manager for Macintosh in English.
The Good News is that there is a place to download an English version of Scansnap Manager for Mac.
The Bad News is that it only works for the fi-5110EOXM and not the fi-5110EOX2.
The Good News is that you can modify your Japanese version to an English version.
Here is what worked for me: (This is assuming that you've already downloaded and installed the Japanese version of ScanSnap Manager from the Fujitsu Japan website)
1) Download Scansnap Manager for Macintosh (in English for the fi-5110EOXM) from
http://www.fel.fujitsu.com/home/v3__product.asp?pid=467&inf=swr&wg=75
2) The download is a zip file. It will unzip to ScanSnap_V10L20.pkg. For those with 2 button mice, right click on file and click on Show Package Contents.
3) Click on Contents. Click on Resources. Click on ScanSnap_V10L20.pax.gz which unarchives the file and creates a folder named ScanSnap_V10L20. Click on that folder.
4) Click on the folder ScanSnap. Right click on ScanSnap Manager and click on Show Package Contents. Click on Contents folder. Click on Resources folder. Right click on English.lproj folder, then click Duplicate. This creates a copy of the folder.
5) Move the English.lprog copy folder to your Desktop.
6) OK.. Make sure ScanSnap is NOT running in the background. Go to your Applications Folder and find the ScanSnap Folder. Click on that and find the ScanSnap Manager application. (this should be your ScanSnap fi-5110EOX for MacintoshJapanese version.) Right click on it and then click on Show Package Contents. Click on Contents folder. Click on Resources folder. Find Japanese.lproj folder and move it to your Desktop for safekeeping.
7) Move English.lproj copy folder from your Desktop to the Resources folder that you just moved the Japanese.lproj from. Change the name of the English.lproj copy to English.lproj.
8) That's it. Open the ScanSnap application and everything should be in English. Enjoy.

I know this is pretty old now but...
Unfortunately Tenders excellent hack no longer works as the Japanese software is version 2.1 L20, and the Mac English version is 2.0 L11. The ScanSnap Manager loads with the new language file, but unfortunately when you click on Settings it comes up with an unspecified error. Shame.

Hurahh! It does work with the English file from version 2.2 L11, which I got here:

This worked with a Black S500, OS X 10.5, the Japanese Scansnap Manager V21L20 from:
http://scansnap.fujitsu.com/jp/downloads/index.html
and the English file version 2.2 L11, as noted above.
http://www.fujitsu.com/global/support/computing/peripheral/scanners/drivers/mac.html
Only thing is the post scanning dialogs are still in Japanese, but the help file link from each one shows a very clear version in English. Not perfect, but a small inconvenience vs having to buy another scanner that is 99.999% the same just to work with your Mac. Here's hoping Fujitsu will drop the nonsense and release universal drivers in the future.
Thanks to everyone for their wisdom and Stuart for keeping this page up.

Hello! I was pleased to come across this thread as I have a great scansnap s500 but can't get it to work w/ my mac. Appreciate the direction to download the Japanese version. (agree w/ Brandt et al, makes no sense to buy a new s500 scanner just to get it to work w/ mac!) Now to ask for help... I have tried the tips suggested (downloading for s500 from Japanese support site) but keep hitting a snag at the first stage of the process.
I get an error message about "index 17" whatever that is which won't enable me to install the Japanese version. Any thoughts? Have a stack of material to scan waiting on the reply. :)
Thanks!!!
